SUMMARY:Legislative Luncheon: Public Schools and the Commercial Tax Base
DESCRIPTION:The Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the first in a series of Legislative Luncheons on Tuesday\, April 29\, from 11:30 am -1:00 p.m. at the Oasis Conference Center. Legislative Luncheons\, which are open to the public\, are designed to bring information to the business community on relevant local and state issues. The subject of the first session is "Supporting our Public Schools: the Role and Importance of the Commercial Tax Base." Guest speakers will include Dr. Kevin Boys\, Superintendent of Loveland City Schools\; Tom Carroll\, City Manager of the City of Loveland\; and representatives from the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce. The panel will be moderated by WNKU (89.7) News Director Craig Kopp. This Legislative Luncheon costs $20 for Chamber members and $25 for non-members. The purpose of this Legislative Luncheon is to open a dialogue about the truth which underlies every property tax levy that appears on the ballot in the Loveland City School District: that only 4% of the property tax income the District receives from property owners is from the existing commercial tax base. There is no easy solution to this problem\, particularly in light of the State of Ohio's failure to fix the unconstitutional school funding system\, and the recently failed income tax levy for a recreation center in the City of Loveland. What approach can the District take to mitigate the State's flawed funding system? How does the City take into account the School District's predicament in its efforts to retain and broaden the City's commercial tax base? What effect does economic development and job creation have on the business community and the School District alike? These questions will form the basis of the discussion with ample time for questions from the audience. Register by contacting the Chamber at 683-1544 or info@lovelandchamber.org by April 25th.
